Reach didn't build a better program; it built a new category of higher education — the work-embedded, debt-free, employer-paid degree — and the field's biggest funders are converging on the idea right as Reach has the only proven national instance of it. Fund the category-definer.

Story 01 — The Apprenticeship Degree Is a New Category
The thesis (the story Reach tells)
For a decade the field has circled the same question: if college isn’t working for working adults, what replaces it? The answers piled up — registered apprenticeships, work-based learning, skills-based hiring, “learn and earn.” But almost all of them stop short of a degree. Reach closed the gap. The apprenticeship degree — accredited, work-embedded, employer-paid, debt-free — is not a tweak to college; it is a new category, and Reach, through the National Center for the Apprenticeship Degree (NCAD), is the only organization running it at national scale across multiple professions. The ask isn’t “fund our program.” It’s “fund the institution that’s defining the category the whole field is moving toward.”
Why it’s credible (proof points)
- Reach is described, in its own and partners’ language, as “the nation’s first and only
nonprofit university fully dedicated to advancing on-the-job degrees.” It “pioneered the
U.S. teacher apprenticeship degree and ensured others can do the same” (NCAD already
collaborating with TCNJ, Metro State Denver, and Mass Bay Community College).

The funder cluster (who this resonates with, and why)
- Lumina Foundation — the most on-thesis macro funder. Corpus shows its “75% of workers
with higher education” goal, its shift to “ensure college grads gain higher incomes,” and a
podcast literally titled “Apprenticeship 2.0 | Higher Education and Apprenticeships with
Jamie Merisotis.” Lumina is publicly arguing for exactly Reach’s category.

The wedge / how to make the ask
Lead with category, not charity. These funders are publishing thought leadership that describes the gap Reach fills — so the ask is “you’ve named the future of higher ed; Reach is the operating proof it exists; help us make it the default, not the exception.” For Lumina and Strada specifically, position NCAD as the field infrastructure (standards, the “apprenticeable role → degree → licensure” pathway) — funders love funding the rails, not just one train.
What to verify before this goes to a funder
- Lumina/Strada/JFF are partly intermediaries; confirm which give direct grants vs. act as co-signers/conveners (a body read of their “focus areas” / “how to apply” pages).
- The “field is converging” claim rests on inbox think-pieces; confirm dates and authors so the momentum story is current (some inbox pieces date to 2014).
