Fundraising Story 02 — Teaching Already Proved It
Reach's apprenticeship degree isn't a pilot hoping to work; it already solved the teacher-shortage problem at scale — 420+ K-12 systems across 8+ states, debt-free, paid-while-you-learn. For education funders this is the rare 'fund the proven thing's next chapter' story.

Story 02 — Teaching Already Proved It
The thesis (the story Reach tells)
Every funder fears funding a good idea that never works in the field. Reach removes that fear: the apprenticeship degree was born solving the teacher shortage, and it works — 420+ K-12 school systems across 8+ states, paraprofessionals and school staff earning real degrees while they keep working, paid by their employers, finishing with no debt. The teacher story is both a fundable program and the evidence base that de-risks every other Reach expansion. For education funders, the ask is: “the educator-pipeline fix you’ve been looking for is already running at scale — help us deepen it and reach the next district.”
Why it’s credible (proof points)
- “Reach currently partners with 420 K-12 school systems in eight states to provide
apprenticeship degree pathways for paraprofessionals and other school employees.”
(Source:
the-goodness-web-foundation/2026-06-11_announcement-1m-grant-to-expand-apprenticeship-degrees-in-be.md) - The model is explicitly the template the healthcare expansion is “modeled after the Reach
Teachers College” — i.e., teaching is the validated original.
(Source:
ballmer-group-ii/2026-06-11_reach-university-and-training-fund-launch-apprenticeship-col.md) - After grants/scholarships the full-time undergraduate out-of-pocket is
$900/yr ($75/mo), no loans — the affordability claim that makes the teacher pipeline durable. (Source: same Goodness Web announcement) - State machinery is already moving in Reach states: e.g., Alabama enacted programs and an
Office of Apprenticeship / credentialing-and-career-pathways committee.

The funder cluster (who this resonates with, and why)
- Charles & Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies — “Building Strong Readers, Writers and
Thinkers”; education/literacy. Teacher quality is upstream of literacy.
(Source:
schusterman-family-philanthropies/) - Walton Family Foundation — career-connected learning (“Catalyze Awards $3.5M…”),
education, talent pipelines; a major K-12 reform funder.
(Source:
walton-family-foundation/) - Morgridge Family Foundation — students/education, “Future of Work Development | Workforce
Skills,” “Empowering The Next Generation.” Family-foundation relationship potential.
(Source:
morgridge-foundation/) - Gates Foundation — “Pathways Education Program,” “A pathway from high school to college to
career.” The pathways frame maps directly onto teacher-pipeline pathways.
(Source:
the-gates-foundation/) - Greater Texas Foundation / Trellis — Texas postsecondary + workforce alignment; Reach
operates in TX, so these are in-footprint education funders.

The wedge / how to make the ask
This is the “de-risk by track record” story. For education funders skeptical of yet another teacher-prep startup, lead with the scale numbers and the fact that employers (districts) pay the apprentices — it’s not a subsidy that disappears when the grant ends. For in-footprint funders (TX, TN, CO, GA, AL), make it local: “here are the districts in your state already doing this; fund the next ten.”
What to verify before this goes to a funder
- The “420 systems / 8 states” figure is from a Feb-2025 announcement; the ACH release lists 10 operating states (adds MS, WA). Use the most current count — confirm against a recent Reach source before printing.
- Outcome data (completion rates, retention-in-teaching, student outcomes) would make this story much stronger and is not in the sampled files — pull it from Reach directly or a body-level read of the corpus.
