Fig. 01Mouth

Low energy, poor sleep, digestive discomfort and inflammation can have connected drivers — and the mouth and gut are part of the same conversation.

  1. What you doChoose testing, guided support, or a self-directed plan built around where you are now.
  2. What you get backA clearer picture of what may be shaping how you feel, so you can choose your next step with more confidence.
  • Protective. These keep the balance and you want them there.
  • Harmful. These are the ones the test is looking for.

You swallow about a litre of saliva a day, so whatever is living up here goes downstream on a schedule. That is what the rest of this page follows.

Fig. 01what is living in your mouth right now, and which way it travels.

Fig. 02Throat

Everything living in there, taken together, is one community. It has a name.

Clinicians call the living ecosystem in your mouth the oral microbiome. Our oral test is called Orobiome.

Oral microbiomeWhat clinicians call it
The whole community of bacteria living in your mouth, counted as one thing rather than as a list of germs.
OrobiomeWhat we call our oral test
The saliva test that reads that community and names which species you are carrying, and in what proportion.
The oral-gut axisWhat the rest of this page is about
Your mouth and your gut are two ends of one tube, trading bacteria every time you swallow.

Those three phrases are the only specialist language on this page. You will see them again further down; you did not need any of them to understand the first plate, and that is on purpose.

A dense field of rounded microorganisms among fine filaments, drawn in ink hatching.
Fig. 02aWhat the swallow carries down. Several hundred species, in proportions unique to one mouth.

Whether you actually get anything out of your food

You eat well and still feel bloated, heavy or wiped out an hour later. Digestion is not only what you put in; it is what the bacteria do with it before you ever get the benefit.

Our ability to digest and assimilate food is tied to our microbiome and gut ecology.

The clinical version of the same sentence

What it looks like from the inside

  • Bloating or gas after most meals, not just the rich ones.
  • Foods that used to be fine and suddenly are not.
  • Heartburn you have started planning your evenings around.
  • Supplements that never seem to move a blood test.

TermDysbiosisThe wrong bacteria outnumbering the right ones.

Fig. 03where food stops being food and starts being you.

Fig. 04Small intestine

Most of your immune system lives down here

If you catch everything going round, flare up for no reason you can trace, or have been told your immune system is attacking you, most of that argument is happening in a tube you never see.

The majority of our immune system lines our gut. A leaky gut creates chaos and autoimmunity.

The clinical version of the same sentence

What it looks like from the inside

  • Inflammation that moves — joints one month, skin the next.
  • An autoimmune diagnosis with no account of where it came from.
  • Getting ill noticeably more often than the people around you.
  • Gums that bleed when you floss, which is inflammation you can see.

TermIntestinal permeabilityYour gut wall letting through things it should be holding back.

Brain fog is a downstream symptom

Losing the word you wanted. Reading the same paragraph three times. A flat mood you cannot account for. It gets treated as a head problem, and it often starts a long way from your head.

The downstream effects lead to mental health issues and brain fog.

The clinical version of the same sentence

What it looks like from the inside

  • Fog that lifts and returns on no schedule you can name.
  • Low mood that does not match what is actually happening in your life.
  • Eight hours in bed that leave you unrested.
  • Fatigue that survives every reasonable amount of rest.

TermThe gut-brain axisThe constant two-way signalling between your gut and your head.
